A vehicle in motion has to battle against many things trying to slow it down. You will have already reduced your vehicles weight by removing all non-essential items. To reduce wind resistance you will have removed a roof rack that is not being used. The next thing to consider is your vehicle rolling resistance. As you travel, your vehicle's tyres are contact with the road. The amount of tyre rubber in contact with the road affects the rolling resistance (the resistance to forward motion) of your vehicle. The more rubber in contact with the road, the greater the rolling resistance and the more fuel your vehicle needs per mile travelled.
By keeping your tyres pumped up to the recommended pressure you reduce the amount of rubber in contact with the road to the safest minimum. Consult your vehicle's manual to find the correct pressure for your tyres.
Some people take this further and pump their tyres up to beyond the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure and closer to the tyre manufacturer's recommended pressure. It is something that I do but I would not recommend the procedure to people that who are unsure of what they are doing.
