Reduce your load

The weight of your vehicle affects its fuel efficiency. The more load you vehicle's engine has to carry then the less efficient it is. Reducing your vehicle's load increases the number miles per gallon your vehicle can travel.

1) Do not carry anything that you are not going to need on your trip. If you are not going to the golf club today then why carry your clubs?

2) Fuel your car only for the journey ahead. Don't fill the fuel tank for a short journey. Fuel is weight that has to be carried by your car.

3) However, do carry a spare tyre and basic tools in case of an emergency breakdown.

About the spare tire issue: It adds a lot of weight. When was the last time you used one? The last time I used one I was in Jr High and my mom got a flat. I changed the tire in a parking lot and we got home. That was around 20 years ago.

Today with the ubiquitous cell phone and roadside assistance, what's the big deal about having one? I still carry mine, but I do hypermile and have considered removing the tire.

I wouldn't recommend it.

When I was living in the countryside I had about two flats per year.

Also, the money charged by an assistance team could be better spent on fuel, which is the whole point of hypermiling.

A spare tyre is a necessary evil.

You could "weigh up" the choice between a pumped up tyre and one with the air let out and a pump. Whichever is lightest would be my option. For convenience I leave my spare fully pumped.
